Can Schools Really Ban AI Anymore?

For schools, restricting a new technology used to be relatively straightforward. A website could be blocked, phones could be put away, or an app could be restricted. Artificial intelligence is becoming a different kind of problem.


AI is no longer confined to a chatbot that students deliberately open. It is appearing inside writing tools, search, productivity software, learning platforms, and increasingly the devices students use every day. That raises a difficult question for schools:


Can we realistically ban AI, or do we need to become much more precise about when and how it should be used?


Schools Are Taking Different Approaches


This is not a theoretical debate.


In September 2026, New York City announced a one-year moratorium on student-facing generative AI for students from 2-K through eighth grade. The policy affects nearly 600,000 students. At the same time, the city is not trying to pretend AI does not exist. High school students will receive AI critical-thinking instruction, and a limited number of high school classrooms will participate in AI pilots.


That distinction is important. New York is restricting student-facing generative AI for younger students while still teaching older students about the technology and testing controlled uses. Even one of the country's broadest restrictions is therefore more nuanced than simply removing AI from schools.


Other school systems are taking different approaches. Midland Public Schools in Michigan, for example, began introducing an AI platform for students in grades 6 through 12 this school year, with teachers deciding when and how to use it.

Schools are clearly not arriving at one answer.


Students Are Already Using It


Whatever policies schools adopt, students are not waiting for adults to settle the debate.

A 2026 Pew Research Center study found that 64% of U.S. teens use AI chatbots. More than half, 54%, said they had used chatbots for help with schoolwork. One in ten said chatbots help with all or most of their schoolwork.


The same study found something more troubling: 59% of teens said students at their school use AI to cheat at least somewhat often.


Those numbers suggest that a policy saying “AI is prohibited” does not necessarily mean AI is absent from student work. More importantly, AI itself is becoming harder to separate from the digital environment students already use.


A school may be able to block a particular chatbot or website. But what happens when similar capabilities appear inside search engines, writing tools, productivity applications, learning platforms, operating systems, or devices?


What Exactly Would We Be Banning?


This may be the central problem. When we say “ban AI,” what do we actually mean?


Should a student be prohibited from asking a chatbot to write an essay? Most educators can probably understand the concern.


But what if AI suggests a clearer sentence in a writing application? What if it provides feedback on a draft? What if it translates instructions for a multilingual learner? What if it generates practice questions, explains a difficult concept, supports a student with a disability, or helps a teacher design a lesson?


The boundaries become less obvious very quickly.


AI is increasingly becoming a feature rather than a destination. Capabilities that once required opening a dedicated chatbot are appearing inside familiar educational tools. In August 2026, for example, Google expanded Gemini in Google Classroom to K–12 students of all ages when access is enabled by their school administrator. Students can use their own course materials to create flashcards, practice quizzes, study guides, and other learning supports.


That does not mean schools have lost control. Administrators can decide whether students have access. But it illustrates the larger point: AI is increasingly being built into the educational environments schools already use. That makes a blanket ban harder not only to enforce, but also to define.


The Better Question: What Is the Student Supposed to Learn?


Perhaps schools need to move away from asking whether AI is simply “allowed” or “not allowed.”


A more useful question may be: What is the learning goal, and would AI support it or bypass it?


If the purpose of an assignment is to see whether a student can construct an argument independently, having AI generate the argument undermines the task. If the purpose is to improve an argument after a student has already developed one, carefully structured AI feedback might serve a different role.


If students are learning a new language, translation may sometimes support access. At another point in the learning process, using that same translation tool could prevent a teacher from knowing what the student can actually do.


The same technology can support learning in one context and interfere with it in another.


That is why a single schoolwide rule may struggle to address every classroom, grade level, subject, and assignment.


This Is Also About Privacy and Trust

The AI question is not only about cheating. Schools also have responsibilities involving student data, privacy, age appropriateness, and safety. UNESCO's guidance on generative AI in education calls for a human-centered and age-appropriate approach, including protection of data privacy and careful evaluation of AI tools before they are used educationally.

So even when AI has educational value, schools still need to ask: Is this particular tool appropriate and safe for students?

A Ban May Sometimes Be Exactly the Right Decision


None of this means schools should never prohibit AI.


There are situations where a clear restriction makes sense. During an assessment of independent knowledge, AI assistance may defeat the purpose of the assessment. Younger students may need stronger boundaries. Schools may reasonably block tools that do not meet privacy or safety expectations. Teachers may also design assignments where the productive struggle of thinking, remembering, drafting, calculating, or creating without AI is precisely the point.


Sometimes “Do not use AI for this” may be one of the most important instructions a teacher gives.


The mistake would be assuming that because a ban is appropriate in some contexts, banning AI everywhere is a sustainable long-term strategy.


From AI Bans to AI Judgment


Schools may ultimately need something more sophisticated than a list of approved and prohibited tools. Rather than trying to anticipate every new AI product or feature, schools and teachers might begin with a few practical questions:


What is the student supposed to learn or demonstrate?


Would AI support that learning, or do the thinking the student is supposed to do?

Should students disclose when and how AI was used?


Does the tool meet the school's expectations for privacy, safety, and age appropriateness?


These questions will not resolve every situation, but they shift the conversation from the technology itself back to learning.


Teachers and students also need clear expectations before an assignment begins, rather than having to guess afterward whether a particular use of AI was acceptable.


Schools need policies flexible enough to survive the next generation of technology.


That challenge is becoming more urgent because AI itself is becoming less visible. In my previous article, I explored AI smart glasses entering schools. Smart glasses are one example of a larger shift. AI is moving from something we intentionally visit toward something increasingly embedded in the tools around us.


The goal, then, may not be to create schools without AI.


It may be to create schools where students and adults develop the judgment to know when AI helps learning, when it replaces learning, and when it simply does not belong.


Perhaps that is the more realistic challenge ahead.
