AI Smart Glasses Are Already Reaching Schools. Are We Ready?
For years, schools could usually see the technology they were trying to manage. A phone was in a hand. A laptop was on a desk. Smart glasses may change that.

A pair of glasses can now include cameras, microphones, speakers, internet access, and AI while looking increasingly ordinary. That raises a question schools may need to address sooner than many expected: What happens when powerful technology becomes hard to see?
When Technology Becomes Harder to See
In August, Polk County Public Schools in Florida told families that students may not wear or use smart glasses during the school day. The district specifically referenced Meta Ray-Ban glasses and pointed to their ability to record, livestream, communicate, and access information without people nearby necessarily realizing it.
Other districts have taken similar steps. Nye County in Nevada, for example, said that even students who use prescription smart glasses must switch to regular eyewear during the school day. Prince William County Public Schools in Virginia has gone further, prohibiting AI-enabled glasses during assessments while allowing limited exceptions for documented student needs.
These policies reflect a growing concern: schools are beginning to confront technology that may be far less visible than the devices they have managed in the past.
Schools Are Already Responding
One of the most immediate concerns is assessment.
A recent case in India showed what this can look like. A university student was caught using AI smart glasses during an exam and was barred from examinations for a year. Teachers have learned to look for a phone under a desk, but smart glasses change that landscape. Not all smart glasses display information directly in front of the wearer’s eyes, but many can already connect users to AI, cameras, audio, and outside information with very little visible interaction.
That matters because AI use is already widespread among students. A recent Pew study found that 54% of U.S. teens had used AI chatbots for schoolwork, while 59% said students at their school use AI to cheat at least somewhat often.
Those numbers are not about smart glasses specifically, but they show the context schools are already navigating. If students are already using AI for schoolwork, wearable technology may make some forms of assistance harder to detect.
Cheating Is Only Part of the Story
Cheating may be the most immediate concern, but privacy may be even more complicated.
Unlike a laptop or phone, smart glasses can capture audio and video while attracting very little attention. That means their use can affect everyone in the room, often without others realizing it. Teachers may not know when they are being recorded. Other students may not know either. A classroom conversation, a presentation, or something written on the board could potentially be captured from the perspective of one pair of glasses.
The Case for More Nuance
At the same time, banning smart glasses everywhere may miss part of the picture. Wearable technology could eventually support live translation, hands-free access to information, navigation, or assistance for some users with disabilities. There may be situations where wearable technology is genuinely useful and others where it clearly is not.
The important distinction may be less about the device itself and more about what it is being used to do.
This technology is also growing quickly. Global smart glasses shipments rose 139% year over year in the second half of 2025, and AI-enabled smart glasses accounted for 88% of shipments.
Those numbers do not mean every student will arrive at school wearing AI glasses next year. But they do suggest that this technology is moving toward the mainstream faster than many schools may expect.
Smart glasses may also be an early example of something larger.
As AI, robotics, wearable technology, and related fields continue to develop, technology may become increasingly integrated into how people see, hear, communicate, and interact with the world around them. Schools may eventually face questions not only about devices students carry, but also about technologies that are worn, embedded into everyday objects, or increasingly difficult to separate from ordinary human activity.
Schools May Need New Rules for a New Era
That makes the policy question more complicated.
A rule banning one specific device may solve an immediate problem, but it may not be enough for what comes next. The more durable questions are likely to be about function, context, and boundaries.
Rather than trying to anticipate every new device, schools might begin with a few practical questions:
Can a device record people without their knowledge? Can it communicate with AI during an assessment? Can it provide outside assistance when independent work is expected? Is there a legitimate accessibility or medical reason for its use? When should consent be required?
For a long time, school technology policies have often focused on specific categories such as phones, watches, tablets, and laptops. As technology becomes smaller, less visible, and more integrated into everyday life, schools may need to move beyond device-specific rules and ask a broader question: What can this technology do, and when is its use appropriate?
That may be the more future-ready conversation.
The next technology challenge in schools may not arrive on a screen.
Students may simply be wearing it.
